I thought of blogging on the go, but either the iPhone or blogger does not support photo uploading. I finished a TV stand, Laundry shelves, Kitchen shelves, spice rack, and a few other little projects since moving in to the new house. There is still a lot to be done before it is acceptable by my standards. I would like to have a patio too. Starcraft and my lower back problem has been a hinderance to progress, but as soon as I find land to set up my workshop on, things will be going much faster.

After several years of usage, my 6000yen Ryobi drill finally broke down. I fixed it and now it's working again, but seems to be getting old. In human years I would say it's around 60. My Makita 165mm powersaw just broke the other day too. The bearings for the motor got worn out or something. Strange how a more expensive and better brand item breaks before the cheap one sometimes. I replaced it with a 190mm so all is good. Can't wait to find land to set up a workshop!!!

Strange construction

The reason the mattress support was made this was wasn’t because I was being artistic or stylish. Who is going to see the bottom of the mattress anyway? The reason was that these 2 in. thick pieces were supplied for free from the HCS. GB them.

I had to make the inside frame to fit all the rectangle pieces, and it’s strong enough for a baby elephant or 10 people, I believe. Never tried pushing the limits, but it never creaked so far with any kind of… movement..

Another thing in addition to the wiring that I could have done future friendly was to not drill in the headboard from the speaker cradles. I took the fast route for the moment, and now the extra work.

Advise to make it nice: When you build, build for the future, and build so that things can be changed and adapted. Don’t just slap something together or use cheap materials. Life is the same. Spend time to plan before you perform.

Taking it apart

In preparation for the move, I started taking apart the monster piece by piece..

The Monitor stand came off in about 5 min. cause it was only 2 screws and a couple pegs attaching it to the bed.

The rest, however, is quite a confusing puzzle, as you might be able to tell. My advice for anyone who is going to take apart complicated furniture or something that has lots of identical looking parts or similar wires, etc. is to NUMBER the parts that go together, or draw a map of the parts, etc.

One thing I should have done in the first place was to use cord joining adapters so I won’t have to cut and solder the power and speaker wires back together… That will at least take an hour with this many…

New Shelf

Since this is supposed to be a carpenty blog, I thought a new shelf would be a good title.

That must have been the most fun I had at Noda so far. They had a word class, dance which I participated in as a wallflower for the most part, and basketball at the gym the next day.

During the dances, in the midst of (my) humidity and stupidity, one of the rubber earpieces to my earphones fell off, it was a miracle that I found that tiny thing in the dark through persistent crawling around with people all around... I gladly exclaimed that ''I found my rubber!'', but some thought I was being foolish. You see, in these kinds of situations, it's good to keep your mouth shut to avoid being misunderstood. hehe By the way, the reason I had earphones on was because I wanted to dance off-beat with really loud music. Other than that, I have nothing to say, cause what happens in that room stays in that room.

In the morning the front shutters were closed for so long I couldn't tell what time it was the next morning. Could have slept till dinner if it wasn't for the need to play a sport. That darkness was nice. I'm so thankful I didn't have a hangover either. The answer for me: Not too much, and only one type. Works every time.

I had a hurt knee, and it got worse when I played basketball at the gym. Shows how important it is to let your body heal properly before you abuse it again.

Great thanks to the Noda organizers and those who cleaned up, etc. TYSM!

Incense Holder

Today was such a restful and boring restday, besides Daniel's challenge to do 100pushups inbetween grappling matches. That had me sweating like a Cerdo! and smelling like one too till I took a shower. I decided to do something worthwile with my time and improve the room.

This is what it looked like before, a little too ordinary: Glass tubes in a glass cup.

Bad lighting and bad photo, but it won't get any better as I'm too lazy to get my digital camera. I drilled holes for the tubes...

Believe me, it looks much better in natural lighting.

Aroma Pot

The original base got burnt a little and looked bad anyway, so I gave it a nice little block for the bottom part. Just like the rest of my room's stuff, burnt with the gas torch.

I don't know if I will ever do this for real, but the bottom part has a slit for storing the glass bowl, making it a little more compact for storage...

This tool is very useful to make arches, etc. because it allows you to make precise angle cuts. It has little involvement with this project since I only used the 90 degree cut...

I thought it would be nice to have a groove in the top so I can sink in the tealight candles. The drill bit to the top left was expensive, but definitely worth it as I have been using it for years. It can bore holes of different diameter, though not so deep. The taper bit to the right helped finish off the middle part, as you can see. The final touch for the groove was with a chisel.

ベンチプレスで９２kgを６ｘ３できるようになった。。。

Baby Guppies!

These babies were all born from the same mother. Guppies have around 10-20 babies, depending on the size of the mother, etc. The mother that had these was so big, and the babies are also quite large when they were only born yesterday.

I hope many more will survive than last time (3) since the parents get hungry and eat them.

The big fish behind them is a pleco. He is a moss eating harmless fellow.

Keyboard Rack

Finally something on Carpentry...

These photos are crappy since taken by cellphone.

Here's the latest creation of mine for someone else. It's a keyboard rack with 6 levels, though the photo only shows 5 since it wasn't assembled fully for the photo.

The materials came out to be about 10,000yen. It would have been cheaper if I used cheaper materials such as 200yen spraypaint. but as the price suggests for cheap materials, the quality is also cheap. If you want a weak peice of furniture which will start chipping paint, it's the way to go! (frankly I don't like paint for furniture in the house)

I made it extra large since I didn't get to measure the largest keyboard myself, and it ended up being H1830xW1340xD500mm.

The vertical pieces had to be ripped from 9x9s, so there was a lot of planing and sanding to do.

Calculating the angles took a little time, but it wasn't too complicated. (easy enough for a person who only finished the 7th grade in math) Each level is 23cm apart, and at a 30 degree slant upwards to the back. As you might guess, this rack is not for actually using to play on the keyboards. It's mainly to hold them while a computer controlls them remotely. There is enough space to reach in and tweak things though.

For all joints I drilled a 10mm wide 10mm deep hole, then used a taper bit before using the 75mm screws, to avoid splitting. I then got a 12mm in diameter piece of wood, and narrowed the edges with a diskgrinder, then cut off the narrowed edge, stained it and hammered it in to the holes I drilled for the screws. this gives it a nice pegged look and you don't have to see the screw heads, giving it a little more style. If the screws are permanent, you can go ahead and hammer the pegs all the way in. I could have used a 10mm round piece of wood also to save time with the diskgrinder, but didn't have time to shop for it. It also ended up being tighter this way, so it was ok...

For staining I got a 4 liter can of wood stain which was supposed to be ''walnut'', but ended up being much much darker than what was shown on the can. It was disappointing, but after reading the instructions, (after buying it and staining all the wood, haha) it said that the color will show up darker on less dense wood, which is what those pine 2x4s are mostly from.... A good lesson to be careful when choosing stain, as the wood you put it on can make a major difference. The best is to test it on a scrap piece of wood, I guess. You can also get a lighter color of the same shade, and if it's not dark enough give it a second coat.

Anyway, after the staining was finished, I started varnishing it with floor varnish, which went fine.

After being put together it was quite strong. Maybe I can make something similar if I have triplets.

Being hammered is only good if you're a nail.

So, the last Monday night I decided to drink half of my bottle of 96% SPIRYTUS (Polish oral disinfectant). When I finished drinking half, with my impaired judgment, I decided to drink a little more, until not after long the bottle was pretty much empty. (about 20ml left) I burnt off part of my beard in the process of pyromaniac activities.. Haha I was sharing the happiness with those over 21, but must have drunk over 400ml just myself. I had great fun knocking around with the dudes, swimming, digging out a van from the sand (with 4 other dudes), playing some delirious soccer in this state, but the result the next day was a very intimate time with the Lord in the sweet tent, and missing out on the barbeque and everything else, for that matter. I realized that digestive fluid has the capability to numb your taste buds when it stays on your tongue for a long time….or maybe it was Ethanol. In either case I experienced a really gnarly hangover for the first time in 4 or 5 years, so I was vividly reminded of my quota... or at least what isn’t my quota.

Conclusion: Don’t get hammered or you’ll get screwed (not the type that you want)

I’ve been plugging away with my regular workout routine, and I’m almost back to the level I was at in Uno! Since I'm not making much lately this blog is becoming more of a workout report than a carpentry report...

Benching is up to 87x6x3 one time max=100 (record was 117)

Barbell curls 46x5x3 one time max=51 (same as record)

It’s interesting how if you build up your strength once, even if you slack off for a while, it’s easy to build up to it again if you start.

It originally took me about 6 mon. at Uno, but only about 2 mon. here to get most of it back, though not quite there yet.

Recently I finished a keyboard rack that fits 6 keyboards. It is for a studio musician. I might upload a pic or two later…

So again I am here at the Hilton with not much to do. I finished my time with the Lord, I finished the work I brought with me also, and I’m on a computer game fast. In spite of all the ranting and raving in my last post, I have to wait till I get home to have my exercise since I can’t ruin these clothes. I will jump my good chef friend David in the kitchen. Hopefully he won’t be holding a knife. I will ...write a poem, yes, a poem! (Es queso)

Extreme exercise

I’m bored right now and have nothing to do at the Hilton between weddings, so I will kill time by writing a thing or two about exercise/workouts.

Yesterday, I had a great spiritual experience… just kidding, but I did have a fulfilling time with my weights.

There are a few things that help give me incentive when exercising, especially if it’s not a sport.

When you are playing a sport, you have opponents who will play against you and you are forced to match or go over their level of performance if you want to win. (This is why it’s good to be on the weaker team sometimes so that you can grow)

On the other hand, exercises such as running or lifting weights can get boring if you are just doing the same thing over and over again. When your muscles get tired, the enjoyment you had in the first few minutes changes to boredom, and when you feel the burn, it turns to pain. When the pain drags on, it turns to torment and suffering. Though this last stage is when you are benefitting the most from your exercise, it makes it hard to keep going.

Since you are not going to get around the pain, (unless you have nerve problems) you might as well give yourself a goal and method more powerful than the pain to achieve it. Here is what I do:

I listen to Godly music that makes me angry (at the evil in this world…). Heavy metal, punk, etc. It is really amazing how you can get a sort of high when you are pushing yourself to the limit with your favorite rage music. I’m generally not an angry person, and I think this is a great way to relieve stress. When you have an adrenaline rush, you don’t feel your muscle pain as much either. The sense of accomplishment is great! Use headphones if you don’t want to bother your neighbors.

I Have a progress chart that pops up every time I boot my laptop. Just drag a shortcut to the startup folder from the start menu. I usually don’t close this file until I finish checking off all the items or the day comes to an end. This file is actually for other daily tasks, etc. but I have a part for workouts also… email me if you want a template of it.

Just like praise, there are two times to get your exercise. When you feel like it, and when you are tired and have a lot of excuses. Have a partner that you bug, and get her/him to bug you too. Having a good buddy to keep you company can really help. If you have a partner you can talk about all the progress you are making, and they can also help you out when you need it. For example, if you just finished a nice big dinner, and happen to not be able to bench press the heavy weight you happily stacked on, you could either die there with the weight on your neck or squish your bloated belly while attempting to roll it down, but with a good friend there, he could save you from an early grave or stomach pain accompanying a face that turns turnip red. Even in sports having a partner can multiply your practicing possibilities endlessly. I like wrestling for exercise, but you need a partner for that also. (Unless you have two personalities) All that to say, get a partner if possible.

This is on a different topic, but of the three important health ingredients: eating right, sleeping right, and exercising, I’d say the biggest problem with most people is exercise. I don’t want to be self righteous (I am), but there are many people who complain about how they are tired, or ask for prayer for healing of some weak body part, but they are not doing their part to keep their temple of the lord in shape. This is not to say that there are those with unavoidable physical weaknesses, but when you see people who have plenty of time to do it and are still young enough without any handicaps asking for prayer for their weak back or joints or whatever when they are not getting their exercise, I feel like they should ask for prayer for OBEDIENCE TO THE WORD so that they can get off of their lazy couch potato / computer addicted but and get their blood pumping and muscles moving like they should. It wasn’t God who invented harvesting machines, you know. People are supposed to break a sweat and work for his food. Especially in this age where computers/machines do so much for us, if your daily work isn’t the type that involves a lot of movement, (By movement, I don’t mean movement where a vehicle is moving you, or fingers moving across a keyboard, etc. ) you’d better get serious with your fitness. You might think you’re tough, and maybe you have good genes that have kept you from sickness, but it will catch up with you some day. You will become a human pickled with medicine and dependent on doctors and might have to check into an old folks home quite early, or become a burden for those who have to take care of you or fill in for your lack of performance. Nobody is an island, so don't say my health is none of your business.

Well, the way the world is headed now with stuffing humans with all this crap medicine and hooking them up to machines and all, it is tough to live healthy.

Let’s all give God some cooperation with our health. Don’t forget, it makes you look better and certainly feel better physically and psychologically also.

I found a website that reminds you of the gomi days by email in the morning or the night before with what kind of trash you take out, etc. It isn't available for all areas.

Computer Sharts

So, I have been trying to Syncronize Calendars and Tasks in Outlook for quite some time now to be able to work well with others on the same data.

For Calendars I found Google Calendar Sync quite easily. You just need to make a Google Calendar and then install this program on any computer with Outlook that you want to syncronize with.

The pain was finding a way to syncronize Outlook Tasks between two computers without paying for a Exchange Server, etc. After much searching I found

which gives you an online To do list, and a third party application which syncronizes your Toodledo tasks with your Outlook tasks.

This allows you to install the ToodleSync program on all computers you want to sync with jsut like the Google Calendar. PTL. I hope to find some free program that will take care of all the Outlook stuff at once, as it will be better than having separate programs for each category of Outlook data. I finally decided to let Percy the piranha swim in new waters. I shipped him off to Iwate pref. where a new owner will lovingly care for him.

I shall be getting guppies again, as they were my first love. (Oscars would be my second choice)

They are easy to keep alive and breed, and they don't eat eachother besides the babies which they can swallow in a gulp... kind of cruel, actually. Whatever the case they look like beautiful angels with their pretty little fins. Maybe I will post some photos once I get them.

I had Percy for about a year. He was probably a few months old when I got him. They live to be around 4 or 5 years old if cared for properly.

These curtains hide the plastic clothes containers beneath.

The rails are simple round pieces of wood. The hooks are just bent pieces of hard wire attached to plastic rings.

Handmade Mirror Frames

I don't like cheap furniture, and a solution to old or junky looking mirror frames can be a simply made wooden frame. I used a router to dig a 6mm groove on the inside of the frame, and screwed it together with screws. It is very cheap to do this if you want to use a 100 yen store chisel, though it would take time.

Digital Spaghetti

No matter how nice your monitor is, don't let it get covered with fingerprints and dust!!!
AOE Headquarters!!! I like the peaceful villagers and the sheep.
Wireless is good, but sometimes it has conflicts with other wireless devices.
So, here is the digital spaghetti! It is a mess, but there isn't too much you can do unless you want to make everything wireless. Just keep the cable excess bound and out of the way...

Right now there is a remote controlled amp (it isn't so easy to reach behind in such crammed spaces) and woofer behind the two coms, though not in this photo.

I'm telling you, you have got to have the BASE if you want to enjoy HEAVY music...

Glitter Lamp

My mom gave me this light for our wedding gift. It goes very good with the wood and lets off a special glow when the light reflects off of the rising gllitter. I shall call it the Glitter lamp! It uses some kind of transparent wax or oil like a lava lamp. I love you MOM!!!

This is the fun part: Lighting.

Any room that looks real nice has to have good lighting, and the same goes for fishtanks.

You can buy colored cellophane for pretty cheap at an arts and crafts store, and just wrap it around a normal flourescent tube to make a colored light.

In these photos the top is just a normal white with little red ones at the bottom.

It was fun coordinating with different colors and themes.

Wiring

This is the wiring for my hand made fishtank shelf and light.

It took a while to do all of the wiring, and it's not exactly the best I could have done, but you can't tell once the curtain is over it. there is lighting from the top and bottom.

I had to research how to hook up transformers for the 32w flourescent tube. (This size is not used much in Japan so I had to buy the transformer and make it from scratch.

Farewell Percy

I will be missing Percy, but he will give way to some lovely guppies or oscars which will add a pretty touch to the tank which greets visitors. He just isn't a communal living kind of guy, you know.

Secondary Desktop

Computer problems, yes sometimes. Here is a spare which I sometimes use for LAN games with my friends, etc. My mom gave me the monitor 8 years ago, it's still working.

When using this one, I place a piece of glass on the opened cabinet doors for a makeshift desk.

Headboard

In between each light, there is a storage compartment for intense incense, candles, etc.

In the top right corner you can see the LAN cable cover going behind the bed.

Built in Speakers

There is 1 built in speaker in each post. The volume can be controlled directly or from the computer. I need to get a sub-woofer someday!

The wooden knobs were tricky. I had to glue it to the original volume control. I used wood glue, but G10 would have been fine too.

Just like the post lights, the front and back speakers can be individually switched on and off with switches hidden right behind the pillows. The wiring for this took ages. There is 1 main switch, 3 switches for the post lights, 2 for the headboard, and 2 for the speakers, not to mention all of the audio cables and computer cables, extentions, jacks, etc.

The cover you can see here is made from Keyaki, a good rival of Hinoki I would say. The smell is just too cool to not be in a cologne. (I don't know of any)

Shadows on the roof

The bulbs I am using now are actually the wrong type. They are standard clear bulbs which show the clear cut details of the shadow,(hence forth the small blemishes) as opposed to the type with a powdered coating on the inside which makes the light softer.

At the top of the posts there was a slit which was from the original processign of the wood to keep it from cracking. I had to cut out these little pieces of wood to bury them in.

I wonder what blue bulbs will look like?

The Posts

These posts took the longest time to make of all the parts of the bed.

Reasons:

Hinoki is one of the hardest woods you can find around here, and if you don't have the right industrial tools to work with, it takes a lot of skill and time to shape, specially if you want to hollow it out.

When I started on it, I did not have a jigsaw or router so the project was on hold for a while.

It was hard to install the lights in a small space even my hands can't fit in. Whew, thank you Jesus it's over.

A Kid's Chair

This has nothing to do with my bed. It was one of my early projects which was part of a set of 3 chairs of different sizes with the same style. It is useful for a stool, or a plant holder, etc. but it's more of a decoration for now. (until we have children)

Monitor Cable Storage

It's hard to tell, but this bottom part is a hollowed out piece of wood which is for the DVI, VGA, HDMI, and power cables, etc. to go through. They are bound together with a plastic coil from DAISO! It's the cheapest piece of plastic that meets the eye in my room, but it does a very good job!

The Back of the Monitor

As is apparent, I took off the original monitor stand, and mounted the monitor via 4 bolts to the center of the back frame. (it was 100mm pitch, VESA) I left a space in the top for ventilation and heat release. It was nice to find the perfect size hollow metal bars (21mm and 25mm) for the for the sliding tracks.

Stored Away Save & Sound

This is what the monitor looks like when it is stored. Looks kind of funny... The top lid with 45 degree cuts is to protect the top of the monitor from unexpected sleep kicking when I dream of or have visions of being Pele in my sleep. It took me about an hour to make just this lid!!!

The 22in. wide high resolution Acer screen comes up from the center of the bed to an udjustable position. Not as big as the 50in. monitor in the living room which a kind person gave us for a charitable price, but good enough for anything you would do on the bed. (not surfing ****) nyahaha

The Headboard

So, this is the headboard, 2m in width.(+ - a few mm) It took a while to drill out the holes for the sockets. The lightbulbs can be changed very easily. I left some crackers and a wireless mouse on the bed to make the photo look realistic. nyahaha

This part of the bed took a long time, but not as much as the posts did.

Ceiling

This is what my ceiling looks like at night. It actually has a warmer lighting, but it was taken during the day with light coming in from the window so the color is different.
